Weather updates and local business searches are the most popular reason for people tapping into their mobile according to research.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism  found that local news coverage followed next, trailed by sports and traffic information.

The most encouraging results came from 18 – 29 year olds, with 20 per cent using an app for local news or information – in comparison to 10 per cent of adults outside that age group.

In conclusion, the report said:

“If the worry in the last decade was that free content on the web would kill news, news organizations are now pinning hopes on mobile and tablets to bring user fees, along with new advertising, back into the equation.”

Are fee paying mobile apps the future revenue for journalism?

And, if more and more people are happy to fork out for an app, will the mindset for paying for news online change?
